Filmforum Presents an Evening of Films Hosted by
NewTown Artistic Director, Richard Amromin
June 4, 2006, 7:00 PM
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In 1976, as the USA’s ballyhooed bicentennial quivered our red, white and blue loins, the back alleys of Pasadena quietly witnessed Terry Cannon, in defiance of all biological imperatives – expressing an unprecedented yin/yang of male mother and midwife – giving birth to Filmforum. This cheery oasis of sanity and unconventionality eventually fell into the hands of Richard Amromin, who, alongside his cell mate, Buddy Kilchesty, husbanded the organization through five years of incredible films, bummed cigarettes and a legendary illegal bar.
To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Filmforum, under the sage and puissant leadership of Adam Hyman, has invited former directors and programmers to curate shows reflecting their time at the helm. Richard Amromin has chosen to invite eight people with whom he worked, or met as a result of Filmforum. Each has selected one (or two) of their films for inclusion on this program.
For long-time habitués of Filmforum this is an opportunity to see outstanding films by eight wonderful people and unique artists whose dedication and hard work nurtured the organization. For those of you unfamiliar with Filmforum, this is a good time to become acquainted with one of Los Angeles’ most enduring and endearing cultural institutions.
45th ANNIVERSARY SHOW
Lets Play Fascination
Fantasizing Power & Impotence in an Economy of
Boundless Looking
Lets Play Fascination is a multimedia program
developed to elicit public discussion on voyeurism,
commodity fetish, and strategies of seduction in art
and advertising.
The program includes a selection of print and
broadcast commercials, 42nd Street Peepshows, as well
as works in photography, film and video by artists
Hans Bellmer, Joseph Cornell, Guy Bourdin, Lewis
Klahr, Peggy Ahwesh, Martha Colburn, Marlene McCarty,
Richard Kern, Eric Kroll and Barbara Nitke, among
others. Guests often include reluctant or bewildered
folks from the art and ad worlds.
Co-curators Marian St. Laurent and M.M.Serra bring
often clashing political views to the foreground, but
a mutual interest in the power relations of commercial
imagery led organically to this collaboration.
